Dangerous Games

By Oguz Atay

Translation & Adaptation by Zeynep Akça

September 2021, ?!: New Works, The Brick

Dangerous Games is an adaptation of Turkish author Oguz Atay’s book of the same title. It’s a stream of consciousness that attempts to understand the human condition and elitism connected within the culture. Dangerous Games brings to the stage Hikmet Benol, a newly divorced bitter man, who is exploring his loneliness, the feeling of drowning in constant darkness of his thoughts spinning like a wheel stuck in mud. There are multiple lives, characters, and voices within Hikmet’s mind, all trying to be heard by him, noticed by him, pulling him deeper and deeper into the darkness. He carries them wherever he goes. The show will have characters played on stage, existing in Hikmet’s mind, as he explores his thoughts through games and plays he creates and lives in. The project will aim to adapt this five-hundred-page book into a full-length play, exploring existential questions while embodying all the voices and characters Hikmet creates through casting and design.

A 15-minute workshop was presented at ?!: New Works Festival at The Brick in 2021. A portion of this workshop is below. The full-length piece is in development.
